Textiles and Photographic Artist

Textiles

What would my life be without thread, fabric and yarn?

I learned to sew on my grandmothers Singer sewing machine.  Only when proficient enough in skill were we allowed to use my mother's electric.

Threads, fabric and yarn fill me with possibilities that no other medium has.

With this medium I endeavour to create items that speak to people.  Through landscape, figurative study and abstraction.  Through embroidery, quilting and eco dying.

My hope when taking workshops is to inspire others to create with textiles, while imparting information, hints and tips on textiles I have picked up through my life.

Photography

Photography was my first love, the essence of light I could (and have) given lectures on.  It's quality can still stir emotion and draw me intrinsically to set up a camera and hope.  After university film was taken over by digital and although I use this I still hanker after those days of film.  Digital for me can never replace the beautiful grain available in film.

So for my work now I use digital photography, purely as a quick element to my artistic self, much of this work is used purely as reference for my textiles.  Occasionally though the image captures what I need as a photographer, these are the ones that make it here, to my gallery and availability as prints and greetings cards.

About me

After gaining my degree in photography in the arts, I found myself drawn more and more to textiles, embroidery and quilting.  Well to be honest anything to do with fabric and yarn.

Today I create my own work plus sharing with others my love of textiles through teaching small classes locally.

I sell cards of my work, enjoy exhibiting my work and sell some pieces privately.

My photography now plays second fiddle although I still can't resist a perfect landscape when I'm travelling.

My motorhome is a perfect mix between location, landscape, photography and I even have a mobile sewing machine to capture those special places.
